Relate the Needs of Children and Young People With Disabilities to the Wraparound Environment

Please listen to this audio clip where we are relaying a conversation we had with a child…

Now you have listened to the clip have a think about the situation this young person is in:

  • What are they worried about?
  • What might they not be able to access with the way you run at present?
  • Taking the stance of being a truly inclusive setting what will you need to do to ensure that your setting is welcoming  to this child?

Make some notes of how you could make sure this child was fully included into your setting.

See below for some ideas of strategies to help:

  • Play some get to know you games with the whole group to help everyone feel they belong
  • Revisit your group rules or charter so that all children including Sara as the ‘newcomer’ are clear about expectations
  • Change the set up routine so that staff consistently check that there are no slip or trip falls – include the children in doing this as they arrive at the setting – keeps everyone safe!
  • Make sure all staff have nominated key children and are spending time with them to get to know them

For all children and young people, it is worth knowing what their strengths and needs are before they come to your wraparound provision. There will be additional information that you will need about children and young people with disabilities but this can be gathered at the same time as gathering the information that you need about all children and young people.
